What is abuse?

Abuse and exploitation can take various forms, such as:

  • Physical or sexual abuse
  • Psychological abuse
  • Modern slavery
  • Financial or organisational abuse
  • Neglect
  • Domestic violence
  • Discriminatory abuse

Adults can hide abuse out of fear, shame or embarrassment, but there are subtle changes that can indicate abuse.

These signs usually include:

  • Physical injuries such as bruising or burns.
  • Withdrawn appearance or anxiety (especially when isolated)
  • Hunger or dehydration
  • A decline in personal hygiene (or wearing soiled clothing)
  • Self-harm
  • Repeated suspicious injuries
  • Changes in communication
  • Anti-social behaviour including aggression
  • Missing possessions or finances with no explanation
