What can they take

If you do not agree to the repayment plan while they are on your property, the bailiffs could remove your belongings with the intent to sell them to pay off your debt. In this instance it might be worth protecting what bailiffs cannot take from you; this often includes things you need to live.

Bailiffs can’t take:

  • Property that isn’t yours (this includes things that belong to your children). These are known as ‘third party goods’. If a bailiff tries to take these goods you should call the owner with the aim to prove ownership. If the bailiffs try to take someone else’s vehicle, ask the vehicle’s owner to contact the DVLA to show that they’re the registered owner.
  • Any pets or medical assistance animals
  • Assistance or guide dog equipment (leashes, harnesses, vests etc)
  • Anything you need for work or study up to a total value of £1,350. (Such as vehicles, tools or computer equipment.)
  • A Motability vehicle or a vehicle displaying a valid Blue Badge
  • Mobility aids including hoists or standing equipment
  • Items on finance
  • Anything that counts as a basic domestic need, like food, heating, or washing facilities

They have to leave you with:

  • A table with enough chairs for everyone living in your home
  • Beds and bedding for everyone living in your home
  • Cooking facilities like a cooker or microwave
  • Food refrigeration facilities (fridge or freezer)
  • A phone or mobile phone
  • Any medicine or medical equipment and anything you need to care for any dependents
  • A washing machine
