If your children are struggling with looking after your grandchildren, you make amicably decide to temporarily care for your grandchildren. This could be for many reasons such as the parent needs to travel for work and there is no one else to look after the child or there could be a medical reason which means they temporarily will not be able to tend to their child.
You do not need to go to Court to arrange this. You could come to a mutual agreement with your child about how long you will have your grandchildren and any other things they would like to be in place.
However, in cases where you may be doing this for quite some time, you may have to make an application for temporary guardianship. This would be for a limited time, but it would mean that the grandparents are made a guardian as well as the parent. The grandparents will therefore be able to make decisions for the parent. This could be useful in circumstances where you know you may not be able to get contact with your child for a while and therefore in circumstances of emergencies, you can then make decisions for your grandchild.
