Fraudsters can use personal data to commit crimes. For example, they may purchase goods in your name or withdraw funds from your account. Sometimes fraudsters clone a card which they then use for mail order and online purchases. If you think your card has been used without your consent, you should contact your card company immediately and inform staff at the Action Fraud helpline on 0300 123 2040 (https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/). Remember there is a black market for your details on electoral rolls and credit cards. So always be vigilant when using your card.
Two golden rules:
NEVER TRUST AN EMAIL – This is one of the most common scams used by fraudsters. If the email only includes a link you need to follow it to read a message. It is highly dangerous to click on any of the links within these types of emails.
NEVER PANIC – You may be cold-called and asked for personal details such as your name or address. Common trigger words such as “suspicious” or “data breach” are used to solicit a knee jerk response and gather more information. Card companies will never ask you for your pin or account details over the phone
Recommended ways to avoid becoming a victim of credit card fraud:
1 – Keep your card safe, do not leave it in plain view, and try not to let your card out of your sight when making a transaction.
2 – Be wary of anyone paying attention to your card, especially when using an ATM – if in doubt, walk away or use one in the branch.
3 – If the card does not work and the seller offers to clean it, politely decline and clean it yourself.
4 – Check your credit card statements carefully, be on the lookout for any “odd” purchases.
5 – Make sure you carefully destroy any old statements or cards by ideally shredding or burning them.
6 – NEVER write down your pin. You can change it at the bank’s ATM terminal if you believe someone has seen your pin.
Some criminals purchase devices which scan your card as it enters and leaves the ATM itself. Illegal devices and surveillance are unlikely to be installed in the ATM at the bank. It is, therefore, suggested that you stick to these whenever possible.
