If you claim Carer’s Allowance, you need to notify the Carers Allowance Unit/Disability and Carers Service of any changes to your circumstances that would affect how much you entitled to. This may be starting a new job, a change in your earnings or simply a new pattern of work. It might also include breaks in caring. It is important that you notify these departments specifically, even if you have already told another DWP unit or HMRC about said change. At the moment, the earnings threshold is set at £128 (2020/21) per week after deductions. Should you be even just £1 over this limit, it is possible to lose 100% of your Carer’s Allowance.
If you don’t notify the DWP of these changes and Carer’s Allowance continues to be paid when you are not entitled to it, this is called an “overpayment” and you will receive a notification requiring you to repay by the DWP. Should you be concerned about overpayments or have been contacted by the DWP, it is important to get some advice as soon as possible – available at advice@carersuk.org.
