If your grandchildren are fostered or adopted

When a child is taken into care, the local authority must promote contact with the child’s parents. It, therefore, is not their priority to promote contact with the grandparents. It can therefore become very difficult for you to see your grandchildren.

You should try to establish contact with the local authority and the children’s department, that way they will know who you are and that you want to remain in contact with your grandchildren.

You can try to apply for an order promoting contact with your grandchildren. This can be made at the same time as an adoption order. However, in practice, this is very rare and unless the adoption is within the family, can also be difficult.

It is also important to bear in mind that once your grandchildren have turned 18 years old, they would have the right to decide who they want to see and spend time with. Therefore, you can increase contact with them at this time, if that is what they want.
