Disconnecting an energy supply is the last resort where there is no possibility of sorting out a continuation of supply. Before an energy supplier considers disconnecting a supply is the last resort and is only implemented when the supplier has exhausted all other possibilities.
Who cannot be disconnected?
Energy suppliers cannot disconnect energy for a person eligible for the Priority Services Register during winter (1 October – 31 March). You are eligible for the Priority Services Register if you are of pensionable age, are disabled, chronically sick, or have a long-term medical condition, have a hearing or visual impairment or additional communication needs or are in a vulnerable situation.
Does your supplier abide by the “Safety Net” scheme?
Some suppliers have integrated a safety-net into their debt management and pledged to prioritise vulnerable people. Energy suppliers, then, will never knowingly disconnect the energy of vulnerable people and thus cannot safeguard their wellbeing.
Getting a debt written-off
Under certain circumstances, balances can be written off, this is usually done when there are exceptional conditions, the most common way is via a claim to the utility providers own charitable funds or from other charities.
Third-Party Deduction Scheme
This scheme allows the DWP deduct payments from benefits and send them direct to the utility company before sending the remainder to the claimant.
Reconnection
Once your debt issue has been resolved you can request reconnection, there may be charges involved to set up a reconnection to your energy supplies. Specific support is available for those who have experienced or are threatened with disconnection.
